Grass-fed & free-range... what are the benefits?

We talk a lot about the quality of produce that we use and about how it is important to us. We love using grass-fed beef as opposed to grain-fed beef and free-range chicken and eggs as opposed to cage laid. However have you ever wondered what the health benefits are? Today we are going to share them with you.

The difference between grass-fed beef and grain-fed beef is that grass-fed beef usually contains less total fat than grain-fed beef. Which means fewer calories but the most important part is the composition of fatty acids is different. The nutrients in beef can vary depending on how well it has eaten. This is where grass-fed really makes a major difference, containing up to five times as much omega-3 which helps with heart disease and helps to lower blood pressure. Grass-fed beef contains about twice as much CLA (Conjugated linoleic acid): as grain-fed beef which has been associated with a few health benefits too.

A happy chicken lays the most wonderful bright coloured eggs! Free-range eggs not only look good they are also better for you. Comparing free range eggs to eggs from a caged hen, pastured hen eggs have twice as much vitamin E and a long-chain omega-3 fats, 2.5 fold more total omega-3 fatty acids, and less than half the ratio of omega-6:omega-3 fatty acids. It's no wonder we love cooking with free range eggs!

If you ever want to know more about the produce that we use in our cooking, please don't hesitate to contact me. I'm always up for talking about produce.

Enjoy your week ahead and keep warm!
