The Family Cook Hero Ingredient Series.
Celebrating the local people behind the food we love.
Every great meal starts with great ingredients. But for us, where those ingredients come from and the people behind them matters too.
This month, we're shining the spotlight on a South Australian name many of us know and love; Beerenberg Family Farm.
From their family to ours
The Beerenberg story began in the Adelaide Hills almost 200 years ago, when the Paech family settled in Hahndorf in 1839.
Six generations later, the family still owns and farms the same property.
What started with strawberries grown and sold from a roadside tin shed evolved into the Beerenberg we know today, with their first batches of jam made in 1971. The name Beerenberg means “Berry Hill” in German, is a nod to the family's heritage and their home in the Adelaide Hills.
It's a South Australian story built on family, farming and a commitment to doing things properly. Their values strongly resonate with us at The Family Cook.
The secret in our meatloaf glaze
So where will you find Beerenberg in our kitchen?
Their Blueberry Jam is the hero ingredient in the glaze on our Glazed Beef & Pork Meatloaf.
It brings a beautiful fruity sweetness and richness to the glaze, balancing the savoury beef and pork and helping turn a classic family meal into something a little bit special.
It's one of those ingredients you may not immediately guess is there but you'd certainly notice if it wasn't.
Why local matters to us
When we choose an ingredient, we're also choosing the business and the people behind it.
Whenever we can, we love working with South Australian producers whose values align with ours: businesses that care about quality, their people, their communities and the food they're putting on the table.
Beerenberg is a wonderful example of that.
From one South Australian family food business to another, we're very proud to have a little bit of Beerenberg in our kitchen.
Because good food has a story and we think the people behind it are worth celebrating.
